JOHN ANDERSON (A special acoustic evening with the legend himself!) Straight Tequila Night, the lead-off single from Seminole Wind, went to number one across the board on every country chart. It was his first bona-fide chart-topper since Black Sheep in 1983. W. Seminole Wind is a vivid personal statement which Anderson wrote after visiting his 95-year old grandmother, and after driving around Florida observing the drastic ecological changes that time and progress wrought on his native state.. Those of us who’ve followed the vicissitudes of Anderson’s recording career aren’t particularly surprised at his “rediscovery” in the wake of Seminole Wind. This is, after all, the vocal genius who won the Country Music Association’s 1983 Horizon Award and helped lay the cornerstone for the late 1980’s neo-traditionalist boom with his aforementioned early ’80’s stone-country hits. Those hits which showcased Anderson’s arresting, instantly recognizable vocal style; a provocative mixture of honky tonk fervor, rockabilly/outlaw gusto, sly, tongue-in-cheek humor, and just a hint of rock n’ roll swagger. The Anderson we hear today is merely the new and slightly mellowed adult version of the stylistically headstrong, fiercely determined 17-year old who hit Nashville running in 1972. John followed Seminole Wind with five more critically acclaimed albums, spawning hits like, Money In The Bank, I’ve Got It Made, I Wish I Could Have Been There, Let Go Of The Stone, Bend It ‘Til It Breaks, Mississippi Moon and Somebody Slap Me. It doesn’t seem like that can happen for you.” During his winning season on American Idol judge Luke Bryan summed it up: “You are going to ‘Aw, shucks’ your way to the top.” And then he did Releasing his debut song “One Day Tonight” during the show, the catchy, romantic track immediately shot to No. 1 on iTunes All Genres and Country charts and is still racking up an incredible number of on-demand streams, averaging nearly 1 million per week. The natural break in his vocals added a depth of emotion and an authentic ache to the song. “People love that song, and I’m happy people are still loving it,” Thompson said. And they’re loving it so much so, he’s releasing his rendition of “Stay” on July 29 – the song that changed his trajectory on the show and proved why he deserved to be named the winner of this year’s American Idol. EXILEExile formed in 1963 looking to play small clubs in Richmond, Kentucky but managed to top both the pop and country charts with eighteen hits collectively, including eleven No. 1s during their 60-year-long career. Their iconic smash hit, “Kiss You All Over,” spent four weeks at the top of Billboard’s pop chart in 1978. In the early 1980s, Exile started to focus on country music. Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder with Jordan Lee King
Fifteen-time GRAMMY® Award-winner Ricky Skaggs’ career is easily among the most significant in recent country music history. If Skaggs’burgeoning trophy case full of awards wasn’t already enough evidence of that fact, consider that legendary guitarist Chet Atkins once credited Skaggs with “single-handedly saving country music.” His life’s path has taken him to various musical genres, from where it all began in bluegrass music, to striking out on new musical journeys, while still leaving his musical roots intact.Born July 18, 1954 in Cordell, Kentucky, Skaggs showed signs of future stardom at an early age, playing mandolin on stage with bluegrass pioneer Bill Monroe at 6 and appearing on TV with Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs at 7. He emerged as a professional bluegrass musician in 1971, when he and his friend Keith Whitley were invited to join the legendary Ralph Stanley’s band the Clinch Mountain Boys. Skaggs then went on to record and perform with progressive bluegrass acts like the Country Gentlemen and J.D. Crowe & the New South, whose self-titled 1975 Rounder Records debut album was instantly recognized as a landmark bluegrass achievement. He then led Boone Creek, which also featured Dobro ace and fellow New South alumnus Jerry Douglas.But Skaggs turned to the more mainstream country music genre in the late ‘70s when he joined Emmylou Harris’s Hot Band, replacing Rodney Crowell. He became a recording artist in his own right in 1981 when his Epic label debut album Waitin’ for the Sun to Shine topped the country charts and yielded a pair of #1 hits. Overall, his productive stay at Epic Records would result in a total of 12 #1 hits. Additionally, he garnered eight Country Music Association Awards–including the coveted Entertainer of the Year trophy in 1985.Skaggs, of course, fit right in with young “new-traditionalist” ‘80s artists like Randy Travis, and helped rejuvenate the country music genre after the worn-out “Urban Cowboy” period. But, Skaggs put his own stamp on the country format by infusing his bluegrass and traditional country music roots into the contemporary Nashville sound.Skaggs’ 1997 album Bluegrass Rules!, released on his newly-formed Skaggs Family Records label, marked a triumphant return to bluegrass—which he’s solidified ever since with a series of GRAMMY® Award winning albums, recorded with his amazing bluegrass band, Kentucky Thunder (8-time winners of the IBMA ‘Instrumental Group of the Year’).
